LENZ'S LAW

branch ELECTROMAGNETISM & INDUCTION

Leading to SELF INDUCTANCE
Lenz's law is a common way of understanding how electromagnetic circuits obey Newton's third law and the conservation of energy. Lenz's law is named after Heinrich Lenz, and it says: If an induced current flows, its direction is always such that it will oppose the change which produced it. The negative sign used in Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, indicates that the induced emf ( ε ) and the change in magnetic flux ( δΦ ) have opposite signs. =Example= A moving magnet which moves in and out of a coil will induce a current in the coil. The direction of the current can be inferred using Len's Law and the induced magnetic field from the current will act to oppose the movement of the magnet. ==Magnet going into a coil== [image:https://i.imgur.com/2SaENRO.jpg] ==Magnet moving out of a coil== [image:https://i.imgur.com/CAdPetI.jpg]
