Gene mutations (also called point mutations) alter the sequence of bases in a single gene.

If a nucleotide is swapped with another nucleotide carrying a different base, this is known as a base substitution.

If a nucleotide is removed, this is known as a base deletion.

The addition of an extra nucleotide into a sequence is known as a base insertion.

Gene Mutations may produce a new version of a gene (allele).
