ALKENES

branch ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Coming from ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
=What are Alkenes?= Alkenes are substances that have C=C double bonds as their major functional group. Alkenes are "unsaturated" due to the double bond. The term 'unsaturated' means that there are not the maximum number of bonds that the compound could have. =Naming Alkenes= The double bond functional group gives alkenes their suffix "ene". Naming branches and side groups is the same as for alkanes. HOWEVER, naming alkenes requires that you include the position of the C=C in the name. E.g. But-2-ene and but-1-ene are different compounds (why would you not be able to have but-3-ene?). Shown below is but-2-ene.
