Coming from NEUTRALISATION
==Metal Carbonates== Metal Carbonates are a type of base that produce a salt, water and carbon dioxide when they react with an acid. Acid + Metal Carbonates → Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide ==Metal Hydrogen Carbonates== Metal Hydrogen Carbonates are a type of base that also produce a salt, water and carbon dioxide when they react with an acid. Metal Hydrogen Carbonates are also sometimes called Metal Bicarbonates. Acid + Metal Hydrogen Carbonates → Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide ===Some Common Carbonates & Bicarbonates=== [image:http://i.imgur.com/1JTFNDY.png?3] Baking Soda Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (Sodium Bicarbonate) NaHCO~3~ [image:http://i.imgur.com/zj7vcWg.png?2] Limestone / Marble Calcium Carbonate CaCO~3~ [image:http://i.imgur.com/6BvgFKd.png?1] Washing Soda Sodium Carbonate Na~2~CO~3~ [image:http://i.imgur.com/AuYDZF8.gif] When a carbonate or bicarbonate reacts with an acid the carbon dioxide produced can be seen as bubbles (effervescence). ==Test for Carbon Dioxide== [image:http://i.imgur.com/KCfqJvl.png?2] To test whether a gas is carbon dioxide or not, bubble it through limewater. If the limewater turns milky the gas is carbon dioxide.
